Sea creatures both fascinate and freak me out at the same time, which explains why I love the ocean as well as have an interest in boats and boating but am apprehensive when it comes to scuba diving. Aside from the suffocating claustrophobia diving masks inevitably bring out in me, I have an irrational fear that a kraken will come out of the murky depths and make a chew toy of me. With that said these paintings by Evan B. Harris absolutely intrigue me. His use of reclaimed wood, waxes, and aging techniques combine to create phenomenal work that recalls a different time in history. Serving as a modern memento of a time before Jaques Cousteau and National Geographic when our only source of information about the ocean’s came from the stories sailors brought back with them after an epic adventure out at sea.

He’s an amazing artist — I particularly love that the art work appears to be unassuming and ‘fun’ at first but when examined is full of concept and clever visual commentary…. I am really glad to have discovered your blog via Patrick Gannon, you have different aesthetic bent and motivation (than I do) but a seemingly similar thirst for artistic discovery that I’m now really enjoying following!
